December's Monthly Programming

December's meeting is one you definitely do not want to miss. This Wednesday, December 14th from 7-9pm at SPU Demaray Hall.

Our mini presentation is by Katherine Pryor who will speak about grant writing: Show Me the Money: Grant Writing for Creative Professionals.

The main presentation by J. Anderson Coats, Resurrecting Your Frankendraft, is sure to excite all of us who are on the brink, or will be in the not too distant future, of rewriting a first draft.

And, don't forget our Cookie Contest! So, let's all rally through the snow, wind, sleet, rain, or hail for the last meeting before the new year.

Cheers,

Kathleen

* Label the plate with your name and the name of your cookie.

* Set them up before 6:30pm. You will be directed to the setup area.

* Contest closes at 6:45 pm, to give judges time to argue.

* Take only as many books as you bring.

Oh, what a night! - part one

Last Wednesday night Demaray Hall was jumping! It was merry, it was lively, and crumbs were flying everywhere. After sampling the SEVENTEEN delectable offerings, judges Dana Arnim, Kevan Atteberry, and Emily Russin couldn't be reached for comment, as they were all too busy swigging from a giant milk carton and making no sense whatsoever.

Our annual Cookie Contest crowned two worthy winners:

For Most Beautiful Cookie, Kathy Manchip emerged victorious with her stunning Holly Jolly Iced Sugar Cookies. They tasted wonderful –  almost too beautiful to chomp into (but we did)! Congratulations, Kathy! Her beautiful recipe is below.
Holly Jolly Sugar Cookies

Ingredients:
- A batch of sugar cookies using your preferred recipe. (I cut out rounds, but any shape with enough surface area would work well.)
- A batch of royal icing using your preferred recipe. (Leave most of it white and color a small amount green.)
- Small red sugar beads/balls. (You can get these at Jo-Ann's or online.)
- Two piping bags and two round tips, one larger and one small.

Directions:
- Fill the piping bag with the royal icing, one color for each bag. Attach the tips, using the smaller round tip on the green bag.
- Pipe a border of the white royal icing onto the cookie, and flood it. There are many online videos for how to do this if you haven't tried it before.
- While the icing is still wet (it will form a crust pretty quickly, so work fast) and using the green icing, pipe a small, elongated blob onto the surface of the white icing. Do them at an angle to each other like the hands of a clock.
- Take your tooth pick and drag the edges of the green blob outward to create the spikes of the holly leaf.
- Also while the icing is still wet, drop three red sugar beads/balls onto the surface of the cookie where the leaves almost touch.

- Allow the royal icing to dry and harden for at least a few hours.

Too beautiful to eat? Kathy Manchip's Holly Jolly cookies.

For Most Delicious Cookie, Lois Brandt's Giant Turtle Cookie confections were a huge hit. Here's the sinfully scrummy recipe:

Lois Brandt's Turtle Cookies made our taste buds sing!

Lois loves her new signed print by David Weisner!

Ingredients:

Cookie:
1 c. all-purpose flour
1/3 c. unsweetened cocoa powder
1/4 tsp. salt
8 T. (1 stick) butter, softened
2/3 c. sugar
1 large egg, separated, plus 1 additional egg white
2 T. milk
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 1/4 c. pecans, finely chopped

Caramel Filling:
14 soft caramel candies (I used Kraft Traditional Caramels)
3 T. heavy cream

Chocolate Drizzle (optional):
2 oz. bittersweet chocolate (I used Ghirardelli baking chips)
1 tsp. shortening or butter

Directions

Prepare the Cookies:

1.  Combine flour, cocoa, and salt; set aside.

2.  With electric mixer on medium-high speed, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Add egg yolk, milk, and vanilla; mix until incorporated. Reduce speed to low and add flour mixture until just combined.

3.  Wrap dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate until firm, 1 hour.

4.  Whisk egg whites in a bowl until frothy.  Place chopped pecans in another bowl.  Roll chilled dough into 1 ½ inch balls, dip in egg whites, and then roll in pecans.  Place balls about 2 inches apart on a baking sheet. Using a 1/2 teaspoon measuring spoon, make an indentation in the center of each dough ball.  Note that the original recipe called for smaller 1 inch balls.  The caramel/chocolate ratio will be higher (it was too sweet for me). 1 inch balls gives you a batch of about 24 cookies.

5.  Bake at 350 degrees until set, about 15 minutes. (About 12 minutes for 1 inch cookies)

Prepare the Caramel Filling:
6.  Microwave caramels and cream together in a small bowl, stirring occasionally, until smooth, about 1 to 2 minutes.

7.  Once cookies are removed from the oven, gently re-press the indentations.  Fill each indentation with about 1/2 teaspoon of the caramel mixture. Cool on the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. If you are going to use the drizzle, put waxed paper under the wire rack to catch stray chocolate.

Prepare the Chocolate Drizzle (optional):
8.  Place chocolate and shortening in a small zip-top plastic bag.  Set bag in a bowl of warm water to soften.  Gently knead the chocolate with your fingers until melted and smooth, placing back in the warm water for a minute or two as needed. Make sure chocolate is well-kneaded, otherwise you get a constipated plastic bag.

9.  Snip a very small hole in the corner of the plastic bag.  Drizzle chocolate over your cooled Giant Turtle Cookies.

Makes about 12 2-inch cookies or 24 1-inch cookies.

Joni on location! Be there!

Spooky spaces... dangerous places… awe-inspiring locations. They’ve got something in common, and with a little insight, you can use that secret to make your stories and illustrations more gripping. Come to our Professional Series Meeting next Wednesday, December 16, when our featured speaker and amazing former Regional Adviser Joni Sensel will hand over a (slightly) magic secret to creating settings that will give your work extra oomph.

Set the scene with Joni Sensel!

Just a few of the books she’ll be using as examples include The Dark by Lemony Snicket, The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater, and The Man Who Walked Between the Towers by Mordicai Gerstein. If you already have these books at home, take another quick glance to see if you can spot what they have in common. (Which is pretty cool when you realize one is a fictional picture book, one is a novel, and one is nonfiction.) If not, several of these and other exemplary titles will be for sale that night by our pals at Secret Garden––so you can learn about that common magic and then pick up the books to see it in action yourself. (And grab some holiday gifts while you’re at it!)

Finally, a wee bit of advance prep will help you get the most of out the night, which is going to be partly discussion and partly a mini-workshop. So come with either a short list of your WIP’s most important settings or have those locations (and times) in mind.

Plus don’t forget it’s our annual cookie contest that night! Enter to win or just plan to enjoy your fellow creators’ labors! Cookies and magic — what more could you ask for this time of year?

Holiday meeting recap, part 1

With apologies to those who couldn't make it, last night's "meeting" was [GUSHING ADJECTIVE HERE!]. It was, if I dare put a mere word to it, MAGNIFICENT.

The annual Cookie Contest was more spectacular than ever, with bakers' dozens of offerings of all stripes (and sprinkles and frosting, if you know what I mean). Never before have the judges been so willing to throw their doctors' advice out the window and dig in.

The judges worked hard, and gave it their gustatory all. Each and every one woke up in the middle of the night after it was all over, a sheen of sweat coating their foreheads and their legs scratching against stray crumbs, panicking, with a single question: Did we do enough?

For it was close to impossible to pick a few from the glorious many entries. Congratulations to all of the incredible bakers––thanks for sharing your treats with us! How can we ever top THAT?

In the end, the winners were crowned and duly applauded, and they were:

Most Delicious Cookie:
Dawn Simon, for her chocolate-dipped toffee confections. Simply, WOW!
(Sorry, they're the round ones at the right of the photo and are a little blurry––
they were so delicious we got misty-eyed! Also pictured with Dawn, center, are
Jennifer K. Mann on the left and Stasia Ward Kehoe on the right.)

Most Beautiful Cookie:
Rowena Russell, for her stunning gingerbread snowflakes.

And, in an unprecedented and bold move
by our judges––the Danas Arnim and Sullivan,
Tina Hoggatt, guest speaker Martha Brockenbrough, and with "palate proxy" Emily Russin
conferring for the dairy- and gluten-challenged––there was a THIRD WINNER crowned this year.

Because, well, it was the...

Most Un-"Bear"-ably Cute Cookie:
This new award went to the intrepid Hamblins, for making adorable, edible art with their
gingerbread bear "pillows" (stuffed with apple butter––whoa, now!).
Needless to say, these cuties caused a lot of commotion.

Thus ends Part One of last night's meeting recap. See you in the second post!

Season's meeting to all!

Fa-la-la-la-la! It's our annual Holiday Meeting!
We're decking our (okay, Demaray's) halls with general merriment, holiday schmoozing, and COOKIES. Mark those calendars for NEXT THURSDAY, December 18, at 6:30 p.m.

The night begins with our much-anticipated Cookie Contest (see *RULES, below) and Book Exchange––so get those recipe engines revving, and come with books you'd like to pass along while picking up some new titles. Book Exchange rules are simple: Take as many books as you bring.
Want to simply donate books? Wait for our annual conference in April! Thank you!

Did we forget to mention that, at 7:30––after the gorging, and just as our sugar highs are peaking––the one and only Martha Brockenbrough, author of Devine Intervention (a Kirkus Reviews Top 100 books for teens in 2012), Dinosaur Tooth Fairy, and April 2015's much-anticipated The Game of Love and Death, will talk about literary living and learning.

Martha, who has volunteered for SCBWI in many different positions for many years, is the author of two books for adults and five for young readers. She's the founder of National Grammar Day (every March 4), has written game questions for Cranium and Trivial Pursuit, and is the former editor of MSN.com. Her work has been published in a variety of places, including The New York Times. She also wrote an educational humor column for the online encyclopedia Encarta for nine years.

COOKIE CONTEST RULES!

There are two categories: Most Beautiful and Most Delicious. (The judges will decide which category yours fall into.)

1. Bring at least a dozen of your cookies to share with your fellow writers and illustrators.
2. ON A SEPARATE PLATE, place four of your cookies separately for judging. (Label your cookies CLEARLY so the judges know who you are!) If your cookies are of a special dietary variety, please also label them as such, so your fellow dietary-restrictive writers and illustrators can eat them without suffering horrible dietary-related consequences.
Good luck and good baking. There will be FABULOUS PRIZES!!

Tonight's the night!

Art by Dana Sullivan

It's here. Our Winter Celebration. The party, exhibit, and cookie-fest of the year!

By now, your eyes are blurred from our flurry of reminders and factoids. But because we love you, and want to see you, here are several eensy-weensy tidbits to keep in mind before you hit the road:

1. If you just changed your mind, or your plans changed, and HEY! YOU'RE COMING AT THE LAST MINUTE, please note that you cannot register for this event online via the Cvent invitation you received way back in the fall. The online preregistration period closed last week, but never fear! You can pay at the door (again: $20 SCBWI WWA members, $25 for non-members).

2. If you're bringing COOKIES, please feel free (pretty please!) to bring along a written recipe so those of us who become your insta-fans can try out your delectables in the comforts of our own kitchens. Not required, but hey, knowledge is power (and cravings can be mighty powerful as well)!

3. There will be an EVENING PARKING RATE for the Convention Center. (We think it's $6, but don't quote us. At least it's an after-hours rate, right?)

Just thinkin' about...tomorrow!

Art by Dana Sullivan

Tomorrow night. SCBWI WWA's fabulous Winter Celebration. 6-9pm. WA State Convention Center. Art, cookies, good news, good friends, and good tidings. (There is going to be so much fun that Madeline herself will risk being grounded by Miss Clavel in order to partake in the festivities!)

Lest you forget:

––There will be door prize drawings beginning at 6:30pm, and they'll continue throughout the evening.

––Not to be outdone by the prizes and the treats, there will also be a book swap. Bring a book, pick a book, and those left over will find a new home at Friends of the Seattle Public Library sale or a deserving school.

––Cookie concerns? If you're not sure how many to make, 2-3 dozen is puh-lenty. Please bring them before 6:30pm. Those bringing contested comestibles will be directed to the setup area. The contest will close at 7pm, so the judges' tasting may commence.

––Parking panic? The Convention Center parking can be found at 8th and Pike, under the CC. Take the elevator or escalator to the Second Floor Galleria. Which is where we'll be. (There will also be signs, if you get off track.) Check out this map if you're really confused.

We hope to see as many of you as possible, and yes, you may form two straight lines!

Award-winning cookie recipe

Here's a holiday gift for all, from kitchen of last night's Grand Prize Cookie Contest Winner Christina Wilsdon:

I'm sending along the cookie recipe, as requested, for sharing. Thank you for awarding my contribution the Grand Prize and thanks for the gift certificate to Secret Garden! Now I can get a great book to read next time I sit down with cookies and milk :)

The recipe comes from the 2010 special issue "Holiday Cookies," published by America's Test Kitchen and Cook's Illustrated. I've amended it to incorporate what I did as I muddled through it....

Raspberry-Almond Cookies

Ingredients:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/4 cups slivered almonds
1 cup (or more) granulated sugar
16 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch pieces and chilled
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 cup raspberry jam

Procedure:
1. Adjust oven racks to upper- and lower-middle positions. Heat oven to 350. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.

2. Process 1 cup flour and almonds in food processor until finely ground, about a minute.

3. Add half a cup of sugar, the other cup of flour, and process til combined.

4. Add butter and vanilla; pulse until dough forms.

5. Roll dough out to 1/4 inch thickness on lightly floured surface.

6. Using a 2-inch round cookie cutter (or a similarly sized simple shape, such as a five-pointed star), cut out cookies. Place 2" apart on prepared baking sheets.

7. Bake til edges are light brown, about 15 minutes, switching and rotating sheets halfway through baking. Cool 5 minutes and then transfer to wire rack.

8. Put the remaining half cup of sugar (or more--I found it easier to use a whole cup for this step) into a bowl. Quickly, before the cookies cool off too much, spread 1 tsp jam on the bottoms of half the cookies and press them together with the other cookies to form sandwiches. Then gently roll them in the sugar to coat them. If you do this while they're warm, the sugar will stick to them very well.

9. You can gather and re-roll leftover dough scraps along the way, though you may need to chill it again if it gets too warm to handle and roll out properly.

10. Cool cookies completely on wire rack.

We are thrilled to welcome Christi this month, and to celebrate the season with a huge dose of inspiration!

There’s no mystery why our membership chose The Friendship Doll by Kirby Larson as our region’s Crystal Kite winner, but this book does include a mystery that hasn’t been solved.

I am Miss Kanagawa. In 1927, my 57 doll-sisters and I were sent from Japan to America as Ambassadors of Friendship. Our work wasn't all peach blossoms and tea cakes. My story will take you from New York to Oregon, during the Great Depression. Though few in this tale are as fascinating as I, their stories won't be an unpleasant diversion. You will make the acquaintance of Bunny, bent on revenge; Lois, with her head in the clouds; Willie Mae, who not only awakened my heart, but broke it; and Lucy, a friend so dear, not even war could part us. I have put this tale to paper because from those 58 Friendship Dolls only 45 remain. I know that someone who chooses this book is capable of solving the mystery of the missing sisters. Perhaps that someone is you.

The Crystal Kite is a regional version of SCBWI’s national award, The Golden Kite. Each of the 70 worldwide regional chapters votes for their favorite book published by one of their region’s SCBWI members. “Like the Golden Kite Awards, the Crystal Kites are selected by peers---authors and artists working in the children’s book field,” says SCBWI Executive Director Lin Oliver. “That makes them unique and especially satisfying to receive.”

Please join us as we celebrate Kirby and soak up inspiration from her talk,  “I believe, I believe, I believe: Miracles on Writing Street.” We believe, too, Kirby. We know it hasn’t all been peach blossoms and tea cakes, but we all need someone who models success with integrity, contribution, and storytelling that speaks to our hearts. That someone is you.

BUT WAIT....THERE'S MORE!!

Did someone say "cookies"? 'Tis that delectable time again, folks, for our annual

COOKIE CONTEST   [crunch, crunch, crunch]

Here's the scoop: You must enter by **6:45pm. Bring a plateful of your favorite homemade holiday cookies (the judges will pull off 3 cookies from your plate, and/or dish). The rest will be set out to share with everyone. The judging will be done shortly after 7pm, and the winner will be announced during the meeting (with fabulous prizes).

And because we love you, enter the meeting-wide RAFFLE to win tuition to our always-fabulous, always-inspiring April 2013 Regional Conference! DETAILS: Get your raffle ticket when you pick up your name tag. Drop your ticket off as you enter the lecture hall.

Merry, merry, everyone! See you next week!
