Mockingbird Books Closes Its Doors Tomorrow!

We sadly bid you adieu

"As C. S. Lewis noted, "We read to know we are not alone."  We have enjoyed accompanying you on your reading journey and wish you many more seasons of getting lost in great books.  Although we have been selling through our inventory over the last couple of months, all remaining books will be discounted 50%."

You still have some time to support this beautiful bookstore in the heart of Green Lake. They are hosting an open house on Saturday, August 27 with food, beverages, and hopefully empty shelves.  Please stop by if you are available.

The Mockingbird space will become home to Little Explorers School beginning in September.  It will be great to still have lots of kids in the neighborhood.

Liz Wong's book launch party

Please help celebrate Liz Wong's debut picture book, QUACKERS!

WHEN: Saturday, April 2nd at 1:00 pm

WHERE: Mockingbird Books!

About QUACKERS:
A cat who thinks he’s a duck?  He must be Quackers!!

This quirky funny book is about standing out, fitting in, and building a life with room for all.

“Wong’s delightful illustrations perfectly capture the sweet silliness of this story. Children will appreciate Quackers’s quirky dilemma, and the underlying message that friends do not have to be all the same will surely not be lost on young listeners.” –School Library Journal“This picture-book debut about a cat with a paw in two worlds is at times charming, at times laugh-out-loud funny, and its ugly-duckling case of mistaken identity will endear it to many.” —Booklist

Congratulations, Liz! Everyone come on out and help her celebrate this fantastic milestone!!

Mockingbird staff changes

In the June newsletter from Mockingbird Books, there are some personnel changes that seem appropriate to pass along to all of you with local book events and launches in the future:

Because our local independent bookstores are so important to getting books into the hands of kids, it's great to know who you're dealing with! So, head out there and introduce yourselves to all of our local bookstores and -sellers, and your intrepid work will pay off––in future newsletters and emails, word-of-mouth chats with customers, and, fingers crossed, in SALES! It goes without saying that the fine folks who talk up and sell your books are pretty great people and avid readers. So you'll be among friends. Therefore: Go forth, and connect.

You're welcome!

hosted the Inside Story here at the shop a number of times, but I don't
think we are members. I am the new manager and just trying to get a
feel for things!

Hurry! Get on the Inside track!

Inside Story is under a week away!

Which means, dear SCBWI-WWA folk, your presence will make all the difference! Please come!
Support all the great work by your colleagues and mentors, ideas that became BOOKS. Mockingbird Books is the place to be, starting at 4pm. Please RSVP to info@mockingbirdbooksgl.com to attend.

Featured presenters include:

Dana Sullivan, Karen Lewis, Patrick Flores-Scott, Jaime Temairik, Roy Kindelberger, Elizabeth Rose Stanton, Nina Laden, Kathryn O. Galbraith, Dia Calhoun, Craig Orback, Brenda Z Guiberson, Suzanne Williams, Richard Jesse Watson, Samantha R. Vamos, Stasia Ward Kehoe, Lorie Ann Grover, and Matthew Porter.

Inside Story is more than a celebration of new books. It’s inspiration to create your own! The event began as an opportunity to support our local bookstores and librarians, and it’s stuffed with information on the “inside stories” of children’s books from picture books to YA—with the feel of a fast-paced game show.

Our Western Washington Inside Story has been so successful that the international SCBWI is now piloting it with numerous chapters across the United States. Read about that here

At our upcoming Inside Story, you’ll hear a little about its history from Laura Kvasnosky, who created the concept for this popular event. In the late 1990s, George Shannon spearheaded brainstorm sessions with authors and children's booksellers. With George's help, Laura's idea took hold, and Chauni Haslett, a well-loved bookseller who ran All For Kids Books and Music, offered her program room as a place to meet. The rest, as they say, is history. Inside Story has evolved through the years, but the mission remains to support our local bookstores and those who connect books with kids.

Don’t miss this special celebration of our Inside Story being sent out into the world. Invite librarians, booksellers, teachers, and families to join in the fun. Come hang out with your peers, play the trivia game, win books, and gobble up scrumptious munchies!

Farm-to-table reading events

An invitation from Philip Lee:

September is Food Literacy Month and October is National Farm to School Month, so it's a good time to raise awareness about what and how we eat with kids and families.

I'd like to invite SCBWI members to two events we're planning with Mockingbird Books in Green Lake to promote food literacy in celebration and anticipation of Food Day on Wednesday, October 24.

On Sunday, October 21, from noon–3pm, authors, Rick Swann (Our School Garden!) and Cynthia Lair (Feeding the Young Athlete: Sports Nutrition Made Easy for Players,  Parents and Coaches) will present.

There will also be a farmers market of school garden harvest, chicken farmer demonstrations, food sampling from local food growers and producers, and gatherings of garden educators, teachers and librarians, and good food advocates.

Wednesday, October 24 also marks the release of our newest book, Sylvia's Spinach, the picture book debut for SCBWI member Katherine Pryor. From 6–8pm, Kathy will give a book talk followed by a reception at Mockingbird Books. We expect to have many of our partners from the food and education world together to connect good reads and good eats.

Please join us for these special events!
