The (bargain) Book

THE BOOK (2015) is available online for free for members of SCBWI.

About THE BOOK:
This three hundred page comprehensive, hands-on tool is designed to guide children’s book writers and illustrators through their publishing careers. It is available in hard copy and online to SCBWI members.

It contains new and essential articles featuring such topics as maximizing social media, creating book trailers, best practices in independent publishing, and grassroots promotion. A highlight of THE BOOK is the up-to-the-minute Market Survey, which includes a comprehensive house by house listing of editors, art directors and key personnel. Other directories include The International Market Survey, The Book Reviewers Directory, The Agents Directory, and a unique feature called Edited By, in which editors have been personally surveyed to provide a history of their recent acquisitions. Key resources include an annotated bibliography of essential reference books for any aspiring children’s book author or illustrator, as well as a current listing of bloggers, reviewers, grants and awards.

The. Book.

SCBWI has just released a fantastic new publication for members, called (appropriately), The Book.

Not only does it contain items of relevance and interest to our collective pursuits in writing and illustration, formatting, submitting and the like, it is also their marketing guide. At 300 pages, it has pretty much everything you ever wanted to know about creating books for kids. And then some!

How can one obtain this magnificent tome? Members can download it from the website for free, or request a hard copy (which will set you back $5 in postage).

Debut authors: get featured in CWIM

Alice Pope has a call for entries on her blog. If you have a book coming out in 2011, you might be featured in that version of Children's Writer's & Illustrator's Market. Her requirements:

If you are interested in being featured in First Books, here are the rules and guidelines:

- Email me at alice.pope@fwmedia.com, subject line "First Books."
- Tell me about your debut book including the title, publisher, genre and approximate publication date.
- The book must be available in some form by November (so it can be read before you're interviewed).
- A cover image must be available by January 2010 (because I don't want to feature a book without showing the cover).
- Please include links to your website or blog if you have one.
- No self-published books please.
- Tell me something fun/interesting/exciting/unusual/inspiring about you/your book/your path to publication.
- E-mails must be received by October 8th.

To read more, check out her blog.

SCBWI Illustrator's Gallery is up and running!

Be sure to log in to www.scbwi.org and check out all the new features that continue to appear with the launch of their new website! (Note: your password may need to be all UPPERCASE to log in if you haven't changed it since the new site launched.)

If you are an illustrator (or just want to browse some great artwork), check out the new Illustrator's Gallery! To add your illustrations, just click "Manage My Profile" and then on "My Portfolio" on the left. (If you don't see "My Portfolio", it's probably because SCBWI doesn't know you're an illustrator. Just modify your profile by checking the illustrator checkbox. Then try again.) Once you've uploaded images, your name will pop up in a search at the Illustrator's Gallery, and others can see your portfolio online anytime. We hope to be seeing you there soon!

Also, the new Market Report is now available to SCBWI members. To view or print a copy of the new SCBWI Market Survey, log in as a member, then click on "Resource Library" > "SCBWI Publication Guide Online" > "Market Surveys". There you can download a PDF file called "2009-2010 SCBWI Market Survey".

And, as long as you're logged in anyway... don't forget to update the rest of your profile, including a photo and publication list!
