Our 2017 Art Show Winners!

A jury of faculty judges reviewed all of the portfolios for our 2017 SCBWI Western Washington Juried Portfolio Show.  We heard over and over how impressed faculty and attendees alike were with the overall level of artistic talent. While voice, flow, and execution came through across the portfolio show, our jury found that the following artists especially stood out in their presentations.

Convention Center show: call for illustrators

Calling all illustrators! For the second time, SCBWI members in the state of Washington have the opportunity to exhibit their artwork at the Washington State Convention Center in downtown Seattle and we want YOU to participate. The exhibit will run from July 1 to September 29, with member events TBD. The application period for this juried opportunity will be from May 14-30. The selected artwork must be delivered to the Convention Center on June 29 and picked up on September 30, and must be conventionally framed. Get your images ready - there will be a webpage soon with further details. We are excited!

Two woots!

Can I get a "Woot-woot?

Congratulations to two of our own: Suzanne Kaufman represented for Western Washington when she was selected as one of six illustrators at the Portfolio Showcase at last weekend's SCBWI Summer Conference in LA to be awarded a mentorship. 

Kathryn Ault Noble, a steadfast Western Washington member who recently relocated out of the region, also received a mentorship. Both of these artists have attended conferences over the years, gotten portfolio reviews and worked hard to move their artwork to the next level. They’ve earned this recognition and we couldn’t be prouder!

Both Suzanne and Kathryn had the incredible opportunity of being mentored at the conference by industry professionals, a prize that is sure to put them even further into the world and before young readers' eyes. We can't wait to see their results!

Each winner  received one of four cash prizes from our new Rollin Thomas Memorial Award, and we'll keep our fingers crossed that the additional attention of the judges might soon turn into career opportunities. Congratulations to all three.

#SCBWIWWA14: Juried Portfolio Show Winners

As usual, conference faculty nearly came to blows over the judging of our annual portfolio show, as the quality of the entered portfolios was terrific and the selection of standouts was difficult. Nonetheless, they came to agreement, and conference attendees cheered at this year's winners:

In addition to glory and potential fame, each winner also received one of four cash prizes, our new Rollin Thomas Memorial Award. In the spirit with which Rollin taught and cheered on fellow illustrators, a fourth Rollin Thomas award was presented, after a random drawing from among all Juried Portfolio Show entrants, to Rowena Russell.
