Come join us for a craft book discussion and writing exercises in Kirkland. Read the book first, and come prepared to participate. After the discussion, we will delve into a few writing exercises to explore the topics covered. This new SCBWI Eastside Network group kicks off the year with the book WIRED FOR STORY by Lisa Cron. The book club is open to all and free of charge.

Dork and stormy nights

Frank Portman, a.k.a., Dr. Dork and the author of the YA cult hit King Dork and also Andromeda Klein, has just released King Dork Approximately, the continuing story of the Catcher In the Rye-obsessed teen musician Tom Henderson, a.k.a., King Dork.

Portman, who is also a musician, will appear at Secret Garden Books on Friday, December 12 at 7pm, and again at University Book Store in Seattle on Saturday, December 13 at 9pm.

Grace Lin coming to the Shaw Series

Award-winning author and illustrator Grace Lin, who presented at our annual conference a few years back, will be delivering the University of Washington Information School’s annual Spencer G. Shaw Endowed Lecture on Thursday, Nov. 6, from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m. in Kane Hall on the UW campus.   

The creator of more than 20 books, including The Year of the Dog, Ling & Ting, Starry River of the Sky, and 2010 Newbery Honor Book Where the Mountain Meets the Moon, Grace will be speaking about the path of a multicultural author. Go welcome her back to Western WA and give her a few recognized faces in the crowd!

New York Times bestselling graphic novelists Kazu Kibuishi (Amulet: Escape from Lucien) and Raina Telgemeier (Sisters) will read from their new books at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, September 26, at the Northeast Branch of the Seattle Public Library.

Local author Tom Brenner will read his newest picture book, And Then Comes Christmas, which is a must have holiday book and a beautiful follow-up picture book to And Then Comes Halloween. Please come celebrate Tom Brenner’s second book at Mockingbird Books in Green Lake.

Please join member Lois Brandt in celebrating the release of her first picture book, Maddi's Fridge, at dinnertime on Sept. 4. She says, "I could never have published this book without ongoing support and encouragement from you, the members of SCBWI Western Washington." She's promising to feed all comers Cheesy Pizza Bombs, plus milk or wine, and to read her story of friendship, promises, and childhood hunger.

Children are very welcome. There will be activities and kid-friendly food. (She notes that s far, Cheesy Pizza Bombs have a 100 percent approval rating with the under-16 crowd.)

Party alert: Seattle Central Library turns 10

The Seattle Public Library will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Central Library with a week of free concerts and programs from May 15 to May 23. One special event on Saturday, May 17, will celebrate, honor, thank, and feature local and regional writers.

Authors Gone Wild: A Celebration of Bookish Proportions
