December Meeting Recap and What's Up Ahead in 2017
Our December meeting was a great success. Katherine Pryor imparted her knowledge for applying for grants. Yes! Authors and Illustrators can actually get paid to write and draw. How fantastic is that? In a nutshell, here are her tried and true steps to applying for a grant:
Steps to Applying:
Identify funders
Create an application calendar
Apply
Grant application
consists of:
Bio
Examples of work
Determining proposed work
What is the mission of
the funder?
Do they have a particular geographic/demographic interest?
What types of work have they funded in the past?
Does the project have a measurable outcome?
Then, J. Anderson Coats infused us with confidence and our dreaded first drafts. Yup, most of us have been there or are currently living the nightmare.
But don't fear. Instead, J. Anderson encouraged us to embrace the Frankendraft!
The "FRANKENDRAFT IS A SIGN THAT YOU TRIED SOMETHING NEW, YOU
WERE CHALLENGED. UNREALISTIC TO THINK SOMETHING LIKE THAT WILL BE PERFECT THE
FIRST TIME. There is always something more to learn." Thank you, J. Anderson. Your words were music to my ears as I race the clock to the end of the year to finish my Frankendraft. But, I'm excited to soon have this accomplishment under my writer's belt. And you should, too!
Upcoming Events:
Stay tuned for details on location for December's Kid Lit Drink Night. These are a great way to socialize with your fellow, local SCBWI-ers and round out the year.

That’s right! Another opportunity to take your project from good to GREAT! And just in time for the conference this spring. This popular event offers you the opportunity to have your project critiqued by a published author or illustrator and your peers. This event requires additional payment. Register under Additional Opportunities.
PLEASE NOTE: This event usually fills up quickly, so don’t delay. If you are not registered for the Great Critique, do not show up on January 11. There is no general meeting, only the Great Critique.
The New Year
The past year has been super awesome and 2017 is looking pretty darn awesome, too!
Have a very Happy Holiday Season and a Fantabulously Happy New Year!

Tonight is the Night - Kid LIt Drink Night - Drinks Optional
We're in the midst of summer and here in the Northwest, we don't want to waste even one day enjoying summertime. There's no better way to do that than with your fellow writers and illustrators for delicious food, beverages, and laughs. Bring your writing and drawing implements of choice, too.

This month we are meeting at Jersey's Great Food and Spirits. If you haven't already - take a look at their menu. There's something for everyone and the desserts! They have key lime pie - THE dessert of choice on a hot summer day.
Happy Writing, Illustrating, and Merrimenting!

SCBWI Season Finale! And even more!
ALL IN ONE AND ONE FOR ALL: Writing and Illustrating Picture Books
(Sigh.... Together At Last!)
WEDNESDAY, May 18: MEETING INFO
We’re counting the minutes before we see you for our FINAL monthly meeting of the
season!
WHERE: Seattle Pacific University, Demaray Hall
WHEN: Wednesday, May 18 (to reiterate!), at 7pm (get there early for snacks and chat!)
First: The Illustrating
Who better to actually SHOW and tell us than Doug “Boomer” Keith and Jessixa Bagley? We start by viewing
brief videos shot at the illustrators’ studios and then we get to grill them in
person. No question too personal or invasive. Doug, who’s been illustrating for
longer than most people have been alive and has more than 15 picture books
under his belt, will give us the skinny on The Storybook Prince, his first
outing as both author AND illustrator. Jessixa, author/illustrator of three
(and counting) picture books, will not only tell us how to pronounce her name,
but show us the process for illustrating her Golden Kite-winning Boats
for Papa.
Then: The Writing
Brianna Caplan Sayres presents, “Writing Words that Beg for
Pictures: Tips for Authors Who Want to Write Picture Books.” Brianna is the
author of the wildly popular Where Do Diggers Sleep At Night?, Tiara
Saurus Rex and her newest Where Do Steam Trains Sleep At Night?
She obviously knows what kids love, so listen up and learn the elements needed
for a picture book manuscript that kids will, well, dig!

You don't want me left to my own devices. I'll end up eating all the desserts on the menu! If I eat all the desserts, I' won't be able to sleep. If I don't sleep, I'll be crabby the next day. If I'm crabby the next day, then I'll be rude to a barista. If I'm rude to a barista, you might get a cup of coffee with spit in it. So be sure and show up. It will be fun!"
