PARKING for CULTIVATING READERS event

PARKING INFORMATION AT THE SEATTLE PUBLIC LIBRARY/CENTRAL BRANCH:

[From Linda Johns, Reader Services Librarian, Seattle Public Library]

Please be aware that the Seattle Public Library garage closes at 9.

We need to be out of the building as close to that time as possible, as to not incur charges for security and the garage (which is a private company, not a part of the City of Seattle).

People can pretty easily find street parking after 6, as well as if they park in the garage and want to find a street spot at 9.

Libraries, Publishers Primed for E-book Showdown

The Seattle Times had this interesting story about publishers decision to limit the number of times library patrons can check out e-books. It's a good story to check out! By the way, The Seattle Public Library is hosting free, drop-in sessions at several branches in April and May to help patrons learn about e-books. Details: 206-386-4636 or visit the SPL website. Thanks to Jim Whiting for sending this link.

Rebecca Stead on the SPL Shelftalk blog

Linda Johns let me know that Rebecca Stead, author of the Newbery Award-winning WHEN YOU REACH ME is the library's featured blogger today--just in time for her visit tonight.
This month’s guest blogger is Rebecca Stead, author of When You Reach Me, a middle-grade novel that just won the Newbery Medal (the most distinguished honor in children’s literature). Rebecca is in Seattle today to visit schools, chat with Nancy Pearl for an upcoming episode of Book Lust on the Seattle Channel and to read tonight at the University Village Barnes and Noble (7 p.m., 206.517.4107). We’re thrilled that in the midst of a busy book tour, Rebecca took the time to share what she’s been reading — and what she will soon be reading.

Extreme makeover: picture book edition

The always interesting ShelfTalk blog at the Seattle Public Library has a post up about the transformation certain picture book characters have taken.

If that putz Arthur denies his nose job or claims he was just fixing a deviated septum one more time, we can now remind him that his old covers don't lie.

Check out the post
. And remember, you can always click on over to ShelfTalk from the list of links on the left-hand side of the Chinook Update.

A room of one's own

This is probably most appropriate for writers of historical fiction and nonfiction, but who knows? It might be just the work space you need at the Seattle Public Library:

The Eulalie and Carlo Scandiuzzi Writers' Room, located on Spiral 9 of the Central Library, is a program of the Washington Center for the Book. It has been established to encourage writers to make use of the collections in The Seattle Public Library and to give them a convenient place to work. Unfortunately it is not possible to offer space in the Writers' Room to all patrons, but the Center will extend the pleasure and privilege of working in the Writers' Room, on a rotating basis, to as many writers as possible.

Admission
Admission to the Writers' Room is for a period of six months, with the option of an additional six months if there is no waiting list. Admission is limited to:

  • Writers currently under book contract to a publishing company; or
  • Writers who can demonstrate a serious commitment to using the Library's collections in the writing of an article, a thesis, or another creative work.

The Writers' Room is available for use whenever the Central Library is open. Desks are available but are not assigned and should be cleared at the end of the day. Locker space may be requested. Writers may bring their own computers, store them in lockers or remove them at the end of the day.

Learn more and download the application here.
