Secret Garden Books - Gives Back This Holiday Weekend

A Couple of Events to be Thankful for This Season

EVENT          Ballard Gives Black Friday
DATE            Friday 25 November 2016

EVENT          INDIES FIRST / Small Business Saturday
DATE            Saturday 26 November 2016

LOCATION:       Secret Garden Bookshop
                         2214 NW Market St.
   Ballard

Ballard Gives Black Friday
We will be closed on Thanksgiving, enjoying the holiday with our families and friends.  And we won't be offering any doorbusters at 6 AM on black Friday either. That’s not really us
We, along with several other Ballard businesses, are celebrating our shops’ biggest day by doing something a little more socially conscious again this year. This'll be our forth year doing it this way, and we're proud to say we've raised a whole lot of books and money for our charity, Page Ahead, because we are in total alignment with their mandate to get new books into the hands of kids that need them the most. In addition to donating a portion of the entire day’s profits, we’ll also deeply discount Page Ahead’s Book Wish List for our customers to buy directly, with the assistance of Page Ahead volunteers on site here, who’ll wrap and deliver them!

INDIES FIRST / Small Business Saturday

Sherman Alexie isn't coming to our shop this Small Business Saturday. Neither are any other authors. We are thrilled to participate in the American Booksellers Association's official first-Saturday-of-the-shopping-season day. Read all about the national program here. Lena Dunham is this year's official celebrity endorser! We're solely focusing on an event we're proud to be doing for our community: Secret Garden Book Angels for the 3rd Year

Through the holiday season, 120 green angels will be displayed around our shop to represent children's names, ages, and their heart's desire in the form of a new book. They've been collected by our friend Michele Bacon, who, for the third year running, has worked in close association with three local schools: Whitman Middle School, Salmon Bay, and BF Day. Michele has spoken to the people in each school who know their kids best - counselors, school/home liaisons, teachers and librarians. Together they've identified the kids least likely to receive a new book for the holidays. Then, the school representative has done a bit of investigative work in order to find out what sort of book each kid would most like if only they could receive one.

Michele transplanted this idea from Anderson’s Bookshop, which she calls “her bookstore when she lived in Illinois” which has a long history doing a similar program. Books are important to her family and she learned about the homeless population at BF Day Elementary in 2014 when she was visiting potential schools for her own children to attend when they moved to Seattle that year. In 2014, 84 kids received gifts, last year, there were 117.

To fulfill our goal of 120 this year, we welcome our customers to pick an Angel and choose a book or gift certificate to fulfill the wish. You'll get a discount on the book and we'll wrap it and make sure it gets hand delivered to the proper school before the start of winter recess. Books will be put in backpacks, given to parents, or handed directly to the designated kid.

We share Michele Bacon’s belief that people want to do things for people, especially around the holidays. We are proud that this is our little grass-root, homegrown way of doing it, and we are grateful that our community shares the generosity to make it a success.

Happy Holidays,

Suzanne Perry

Book Launch for Barbara Jean Hicks

Barbara Jean Hicks, Once Upon a Parsnip

Join Little Red and Old Bully Wolf on a madcap shopping spree through the marvelous Fairytale Market! Little Red is simply looking for parsnips for Granny Hood’s lunch, but Mr. Wolf is determined to snare the stew-worthy trio of famous pigs who run the store―and getting back at Little Red wouldn’t be bad, either.

This fairytale mash-up is rhyming fun with no agenda―but don’t be surprised if kids take a sudden interest in trying new foods, like Little Red’s mouth-watering Apple-Parsnip Soup. The child-tested recipe is included!
“A Perfect read-aloud, fun for listeners and readers alike.” —NW Authors 4 Authors

In the last dozen years, Barbara Jean has written about monsters, cats and fairytale characters, including the princess sisters from Disney’s Oscar-winning animated film, Frozen. Inspired by the pure gumption of Elsa and Anna of Arendelle, she will don her tiara and gown for her appearance here.

Jennifer March Soloway and Book Launch for Jay Asher

How To Be a Guest at Jennifer's Dinner Table

WOW! What a Kick-off to our SCBWI season. Jennifer March Soloway was our guest agent from the Andrea Brown Literary Agency and she was truly one to listen to. Immediately, she captured the audience in Demaray Hall at SPU last week with her charisma for books, the authors and illustrators behind the books, and those of us who are either dipping our toes into the craft to those of us who are so close to getting an agent. No matter where you are in the process, Jennifer was rooting for each of us!

Jennifer talked about her methods for reading through submissions and the slush pile. But the nuggets of her talk that never get old no matter where you are in the "getting published" process, Jennifer says that "... every rejection is a choice: to keep going or to quit." If you are enjoying the ride, you keep on going. If you are in the process of revising your work, this is the time to embrace the magical transformation of your manuscript or picture book dummy to that of published book. Here are a few key points from Jennifer's presentation that are must haves:

  • A dynamic opening line
  • A strong, engaging voice
  • An intriguing premise that feels different from anything else
  • An opening scene filed with drama that has enough context to immediately ground the reader in the world
  • An irresistible character with high stakes
  • An additional story thread that is also compelling

On Thursday, Jennifer taught a master class with more awesome information for perfecting our crafts. In a nutshell, there are three stages of writing:
  1. Writing for story - here is where you just write. No editing. Only writing.
  2. Revise for structure, plot, clarity, and character.
  3. Polish language at the line level - POV and word choice.
To summarize, per Jennifer:

Recipe for page-turning best seller!

Thank you, Jennifer, for spending two days with us here in Seattle. We are all looking forward to seeing you again - as our agent!

On another note, let's give a "SHOUT OUT" to Milagros Welt, aka Mili, aka Snack Mistress! First time out of the gate and she put on a spooktacularly delicious Halloween themed spread of snacks and beverages. I can't wait to see what November brings. Mili, awesome and thank you!

BOOK LAUNCH

BOOK LAUNCHES TO CELEBRATE

Come help me CELEBRATE the release of my debut novel for middle-grade readers, CHASING AT THE SURFACE, out on October 4, from WestWinds Press. After her mother unexpectedly leaves home, twelve-year old Marisa struggles with her feelings of loss and abandonment just as a pod of nineteen orca whales―mothers with their new calves following a run of chum salmon―become trapped in the enclosed inlet near her Northwest home. Marisa’s journey to help the whales find their way home brings her to a new understanding of the assaults humans have had on nature, and the complicated meaning of family and home.

Sharon Mentyka is a children’s writer, designer and educator, with an MFA in Writing from the Northwest Institute of Literary Arts (NILA) Whidbey Writers Workshop. Her stories and essays, for both children and adults, have appeared in numerous literary magazines including ColumbiaKids, Cricket and Soundings Review. B IN THE WORLD, an illustrated children’s chapter book about a gender non-conforming child was published in 2014. When Paxton C. Heymeyer’s babysitter tells him to say the magic word, she could never have imagined that what would happen next would be a walrus running after her, an elephant in the living room playing cards, and a full water park and moat in the front yard. And that’s just the beginning…

From the brilliant mind of Mac Barnett and illustrated by rising star Elise Parlsey, comes this wildly clever cautionary tale of what the magic word really is.

Come join us for an evening with one of the most versatile, prolific, and awarded people currently working in kid lit today. See his book list below and marvel at the diversity and scope!

Riots over the medical use of cadavers. Public access to institutions for the insane. And full-blown surgeries without the aid of anesthetics or painkillers. Welcome to the middle ages of American medicine. Bleed, Blister, Puke, and Purge exposes the extraordinary practices and major players of American medical history, from the colonial era to the late 1800s. It's hard to believe that today's cutting-edge medicine originated from such crude beginnings, but this book reminds us to be grateful for today's medical care, while also raising the question: what current medical techniques will be the horrors of tomorrow?

Book Launch and Cake Walk for Jaime Temairik's New Picture Book

Jaimie Temairik has got her very own, first picture book both illustrated and written by her. Sure, she's doodled illustrations for other people's writings before, (Bigfoot Does Not Like Birthday Parties, by Eric Ode, and How to Negotiate Everything by David Spellman). But for this one, the writer she's doodling for is none other than Jaimie. And that is her!

Alice & Lucy Will Work for Bunk Beds is about a couple of gluten-loving sister bears. Bears who are sisters. With a penchant for baking and for getting their way. Start polishing your cake walk shoes, and plan to hit this party on a Sunday afternoon after you stroll the Ballard Sunday Market. Which is the best darned farmers market in all the land. With an old fashioned cake walk (which will include several lucky winners going home with several gourmet homemade cakes) this is the not-to-be-missed party of early summer. And, it's free!

Join local author Sharon Mentyka and illustrator Stephen Schlott on Friday, March 13, 7–9pm  at Secret Garden Books, in Ballard for the book party and launch for B IN THE WORLD, a chapter book for kids ages 5 and up and the people who love them, that takes an open-hearted, kids-eyed view of what it means to be “different” and celebrates children for who they are meant to be, not how others want to label them.

B IN THE WORLD tells the story of B, who "wasn’t really sure why one day he felt like wearing overalls and a flannel shirt, and the next day woke up wishing he could dress like his sister Patti-Anne.” The book is intended for both children and families who may have personal experience with gender non-conforming children but is also appropriate for all families interested in teaching tolerance and broadening their understanding of gender diversity. Kids are welcome! There will be dress-up activities and cupcakes! More information is available at the book’s website:http:www.bintheworld.com
