It was released by publisher Untreed Reads in both ebook and paperback on Feb. 11.

Deb Caletti's new book and appearances

Members Suzanne Selfors and Patrick Jennings, both recipients of our state book award in the middle grade category, will be visiting bookstores in January to kick off the new year by celebrating the release of their newest titles!

Next Top Villain (Little, Brown) kicks off Suzanne's new series based in the world of Ever After High, a boarding school for the sons and daughters of fairytale characters. Hissy Fitz (Egmont USA) is Patrick's new book about a cat that makes Grumpy Cat seem pleasant. Both books release on January 6. Catch up with either or both authors here:

Josh Tuininga, an artist featured at our recent SCBWI Artists Showcase at the Convention Center, is celebrating the release of his first picture book, Why Blue?

The book launch takes place at Mockingbird Books in Greenlake this Saturday, April 19 from 2-4pm.

Bear-y good news

Whidbey Island artist Anne Belov writes with some great news to share. Her wordless picture book, Pandamorphosis, will be published by Booktrope around mid-April. "In time for International Panda Day!" she says. "Who knew there was such a thing?" Anne's other panda-tastic title are part of her Panda Chronicles, which you can check out on her blog. In case you didn't see it, our very own Nina Laden, the author of Peek-a-Who?, has written its sequel, titled Peek-a-ZOO! after a decade. Publisher's Weekly took notice in a great article all about it.

Kirby Larson's book launch

Suzanne Selfors book release

 Good news! A new book is born!

April 2 is the official release of Suzanne Selfors's new middle grade book, The Sasquatch Escape, Book One in the Imaginary Veterinary Series. Illustrated by Dan Santat, this is the story of Ben Silverstein and Pearl Petal, who become apprentices in a secret hospital for imaginary creatures. Published by Little, Brown, the second book will release in September.

As part of her promotion, Suzanne will be leaving free copies of the book with the Sasquatch statue at Pike Place Market for lucky readers to find.

INSIDE STORY: Call for entries

Do you have a new book, or one coming out soon? If so, you may be eligible to present at Inside Story, our SCBWI Western Washington region's twice-yearly celebration of new books! We invite our membership and area booksellers, teachers, and librarians to view 2-minute presentations from the first 15 or so eligible PAL members who apply. The deadline is April 1st, but only a fool would delay.

Here are the details:

Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. To be eligible, you need to be able to say "yes!" to all of the following:

• You are an SCBWI member at the PAL level and your profile at SCBWI.org is updated to reflect this.
• You live in the official Western Washington region. If you’re a member and uncertain which region you’re in, please check your member profile on SCBWI.org.
• Your publisher is on SCBWI’s lists of recognized (traditional) publishers; (found in the Market Surveys section of the SCBWI Publication THE BOOK, available to members for free download here).
• Your book is released between four months before or three months after April 30.
• Your book is readily available through normal trade channels (e.g., Baker & Taylor).

Stacey R. Campbell's YA debut out today

Anacortes author Stacey R. Campbell's debut YA novel, Hush (Green Darner Press, a new imprint of Gemelli Press), releases today as an e-book, and the paperback will follow in mid-January. Please see her website for more details and information about Stacey, as well as her Facebook fan page.

The first in a planned series of Lakeview books,
Hush begins the story of a quest to find a missing heir to one of Europe's thrones, from the exclusive grounds of a boarding school to the United Kingdom. And it begins the story of Blakely and Max, and how their paths cross in the search for the truth.

Helen Landalf's paperback release

Here's the good news Helen Landalf shared at the Professional Series Meeting last week, which everyone should know about.

Helen's debut YA novel, Flyaway, has just released in a paperback edition from Graphia, an imprint of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, with a beautiful new cover.

Mark Holtzen book release

Mark Holtzen announces the release of his self-published children's book, The Pig War, which has garnered some impressive attention. It is being sold in about fifteen bookstores around the region  and received a starred review from Kirkus. Way to go, Mark!

When his parents send him to remote Mobray Island for a summer with his curmudgeonly grandfather, bookish Kell thinks his time is going to be a boring bust. But he and his boisterous sister Grace are quickly drawn into events from the island’s past—The Pig War of 1859. By summer’s end Kell learns that Mobray Island holds more adventure than he bargained for: shady ancestors, shadier neighbors, and even some discoveries about himself.

Chinook Update event deadlines

Hear ye, hear ye!


For those of you––and there luckily have been many!––who have upcoming or imminent book events (release, signing, appearances, panels, etc.), there is going to be more reason to the rhyme of how we announce and post this on the Chinook Update.


So, without further ado:

- If you are a SCBWI-WWA member and have a book event, lecture, appearance, signing that is NOT a release, please submit your information (who/what/when/where/contact info) TWO WEEKS before the beginning of the month it is slated to happen. That way I can make sure it is part of a consolidated news post for the month or the given week it is slated to happen.

- If you are a SCBWI-WWA member who has a book release/new publication, please follow the same timeline, TWO WEEKS prior to the month it happens. Your release will appear a separate blog post to celebrate your efforts and let you have your moment in the spotlight. Huzzah!

Kirk Parrish book release

Seattle-based illustrator Kirk Parrish is excited to announce that his book, The Pepperoni Palm Tree, is officially available!

It's the story about the only tree of its kind in the world and a boy named Frederick, and delves into the challenge of being true to oneself while celebrating the uniqueness that enables each of us to shine.

The book was written by Aidan Patrick Meath and Jason Killian Meath, with illustration by Kirk Parrish.
