Anne Belov's art opening

Anne Belov will be having a show of her paintings, titled "Room With a View," during the month of October at the Fountainhead Gallery on Queen Anne Hill (625 W McGraw St, Seattle). 

 

Anne, as many of you know, is a fine-arts painter who also has a passion for all things panda!

The show opens Saturday, October 10th with a reception from 5-7 PM. 

Regular gallery hours are from 11-6 Thursday through Sunday.

In other good news, Anne has also recently been selected to be in the 2015/16 mentorship program through Nevada SCBWI!

Bear-y good news

Whidbey Island artist Anne Belov writes with some great news to share. Her wordless picture book, Pandamorphosis, will be published by Booktrope around mid-April. "In time for International Panda Day!" she says. "Who knew there was such a thing?" Anne's other panda-tastic title are part of her Panda Chronicles, which you can check out on her blog. Kid Lit panda-monium TOMORROW

Join in for thrills and spills (hey, not on my nice clothes!) and maybe a dirty limerick or two, when the provincial panda shows up in the big city for her art opening!  Come to Anne Belov's two-person art show (with Jennifer Frohwerk) and reception first, from 1:30–3:30pm at nearby Ida Culver House (2315 NE 65th, between 25th and 23rd NE––free food and wine!) and then adjourn to the  Pub at Third Place Books Ravenna (6504 20th Ave NE). Or, heck, just show up at the pub! 

 
“Kid-lit Afternoon” sounded like a bad Quentin Tarantino movie, so maybe we can convene at the pub at about 7pm. As Anne says, "The pandas are standing by!"

March PSM: One-week countdown!

Next week at this time, you have the chance to attend our March Professional Series Meeting, featuring two exciting speakers on two relevant and inspiring topics. Be there, or beware: This is some information you WILL NOT want to miss!


Mini-Session: STRATEGIES TO A SUCCESSFUL KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN with Anne Belov. Many authors and illustrators are turning to Kickstarter (a crowd-sourced funding platform) to help establish community outreach or personal projects, but there’s a lot you need to know beyond your project’s end goal. Ann will share what she did right with her successful Kickstarter campaign, and what might have helped her move beyond her listed fund goal.

Main Program: BOOK MARKETING 101 with former Scholastic associate director of marketing, Jessica Schein. This presentation will include an overview of ways to successfully market one’s book without spending a lot of money. This includes using Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and other social media outlets to promote oneself and build community. It will also cover why it’s important to build one’s personal community. Today’s marketing is not necessarily book-specific, it is person-specific. There will be handout detailing what authors can do online and in-person as well as a timeline.

March PSM: Meet Anne Belov

Anne Belov

 

Whidbey Island artist Anne Belov will speak at the March 14 Professional Series Meeting on "Strategies to a Successful Kickstarter Campaign." As a Kickstarter success story, Anne will share her strategies for not only meeting her original fundraising goal, but surpassing it. She is a fine artist who has actually made a living off her art for over 20 years. Her infectious laughter, silliness, and panda kindergarten pranks might give you the impression that she feels life is a continuous party, but she's extremely organized and disciplined. Anne paints, writes, makes prints, and is the founder of The Institute for Contemporary Panda Satire. Her paintings are on view at the Rob Schouten Gallery. Her cartoons appear in The Panda Chronicles, and her new book is available by clicking here. In April, she will teach a course on Beginning Egg Tempera at the Whidbey Island Fine Art Studio. She has written articles about Kickstarter for Funds for Writers, New York Artists Online Blog, and Whidbey Life Magazine.

Good News and A Note of Thanks from Anne Belov

From Fellow SCBWI WWA member Anne Belov:

While this is not children's book related (except for the fact that everything is interconnected, isn't it?) I wanted to pass on the good news that my Kickstarter project to partially fund a painting/printmaking trip to Italy this summer, was successfully funded as of Friday, March 2.

For those who don't know about Kickstarter, it is a "crowd-sourcing / micro funding" vehicle. You define your project, set your funding goals, create rewards for funding at different levels, and if you reach your funding goal by the deadline, you get money for your project! This has great applications for writers, whether you are planning to go the traditional publishing route or self publish.

Fellow SCBWI member Anne Belov is giving free presentations at the Freeland Library over the next two weeks.

Here's information on her presentations:

Friday, October 21, at 11 a.m.- Project Management for Artists

This is not as boring as it sounds. It's all about how to plan your time so that you get your creative work done without having a nervous break down. We'll discuss ways of breaking down the big pieces into smaller ones to accomplish your creative goals. This is appropriate for all forms of creative work, not just visual art. Handouts will be provided. Please sign up at the Freeland library.

Friday October 28, at 11 a.m.- Hand Printed Paper Without a Press

This will be really fun. Get ink on your hands as well as the paper. We will play with printing papers using all sorts of found "templates". The resulting paper can be used for many things, not limited to cards, wrapping paper, and furniture embellishments. A supply list for those who want to do more work at home will be provided. You must sign up at the Freeland library as the class is limited to 10 people and is almost full.

Anne Belov Workshop: Finding the Light In Interiors

Working from photographic source materials, we will explore creating a believable sense of illumination in your painting in this 2-day workshop. Issues explored are perspective, establishing a value structure, proportion, and establishing a light source, among others. While this class is geared towards painters, illustrators can learn much about creating a believable setting.

Students should be reasonably comfortable with their chosen media, and have basic drawing skills. Instructor has extensive experience working in oils, watercolor, acrylics, and pencil.

Anne Belov Presentation

SCBWI member Anne Belov will be giving a presentation at the Freeland Library (on Whidbey Island): "Art Forgery for Fun and Profit, or what Makes Great Art Great", this Sunday February 20, at 2 p.m. Anne will discuss what painters (and illustrators!) can learn from copying the great works of art. As the artist responsible for about a third of the show, Anne knows what she's talking about. This talk is in conjunction with an exhibit, "Forgeries from the Froggwell Collection," now on view at the library. Come see the show. You'll swear you're at the Tate Britain. Among the paintings copied, see works "by" Vermeer, John Singer Sargent, Edgar Degas, J.M. Whistler, and much more! For directions to the library, visit the library webpage.

A big yahoo for Curtis Manley! He received a Letter of Commendation from SCBWI's Barbara Karlin Grant committee for his picture book manuscript THE CRANE GIRL. The story is a retold version of the Japanese folktale about a crane who takes human form out of love for the person who saved her life. Integral to his retelling are haiku in the voices of each of the characters.

Hip Hip Hooray for Anne Belov! One of her cartoons, The Panda Ranch Experience, appears in Henry Nicholls new book, THE WAY of the PANDA (published by Profile Press in Great britain, publication date September 30, 2010).

And last but not least, here's a big Woo Hoo for Elizabeth Blake! She has an illustration that is being published in the U.S. and at least one other country. The illustration is called "Life is Fragile".
The idea was to make an image to remind families to use child safety seats. It is being used in Washington state as a poster, it is in process of becoming a booklet. It is being used by hospital nurseries and pediatric clinics in Washington, in child safety seat programs in the U.S. and Guam.
