Call for diverse submissions

Samantha Clark, the Austin, Texas SCBWI Regional Advisor has opened submissions for their Scholarship of Creators of Diverse Characters, which is open to all writers and illustrators who are creating diverse characters in a current manuscript.
 
The scholarship is only open to SCBWI members, and the winner gets free entrance to the Austin, TX 2016 Writers & Illustrators Working Conference on May 14. (The winner does not have to be from Austin -- last year's winner was from California -- but the award does not include airfare and hotel.)
 
The deadline to apply is February 5 at 5pm Central time.

A portfolio of SCBWI illustrator members' work will be on display at the SCBWI Showcase during the next Bologna Book Fair (April 4–7, 2016) and available for browsing by publishers, agents and other attendees from across the world. In addition, there will be an online gallery of submissions.

Illustrators: BIG Bologna 2016 opportunity!

Take note, illustrators: This is one of those BIG DEALS!

 

 

Every two years the SCBWI has a booth at the International Children’s Book Fair in Bologna, Italy. SCBWI will be displaying the 10 finalists of the hugely successful BIG (Bologna Illustrators Gallery) at our 2016 Bologna Book Fair booth. This will be seen by publishers, agents, and other attendees from across the world. 

In addition, a digital version of the entire shortlisted portfolio will be posted on scbwi.org with thumbnails of artwork and contact information. SCBWI has engaged a prestigious judging panel that will gather the shortlist.

Entry fee: $15.

New Voices Award deadline

Writers, get those manuscripts ready!  

 

The deadline for LEE & LOW's sixteenth annual New Voices Award writing contest is 

September 30, 2015.

 

The Award is given annually by LEE & LOW BOOKS for a children's picture book manuscript by a new writer of color. The contest encourages writers of color to submit their work to a publisher that takes pride in nurturing new talent. Past winners include Juna's Jar by Jane Bahk and It Jes' Happened by Don Tate.

 

Award winners receive a cash prize of $1000 and our standard publication contract, and Honor winners receive a prize grant of $500.

Food Literacy Month goodies

PALs: August 15 Naylor Fellowship deadline!

File this under the LATE NOTICE, BUT BETTER LATE THAN NEVER category:

The 2016 PEN/Phyllis Naylor Working Writer Fellowship comes with a pretty good reward: $5,000.

That's right: $5,000.

It's for PAL folks: It's an annual prize awarded to an author of children's or young adult fiction, who has previously published at least ONE  book, and could use the funds to complete another work in progress. For those of you on the cusp of publication, file this one under APPLY NEXT YEAR.

Apply for: Artist Trust's Story Award

The Gar LaSalle Story Award, offered through Artist Trust, is open to applications for the 2015 year's award: a single prize of $10,000. The award is for the Washington State artist who demonstrates the art of storytelling through their specific medium. This year's award is in the Literature (fiction) category, which means....YOU SHOULD GO FOR IT!

Submit to New Visions Award

TU Books, the YA and MG imprint of Lee & Low Books, has announced its third annual New Visions Award.

Seeking young-adult or middle-grade manuscripts that are by writers of color, Tu Books awards its winner with a $1,000 cash prize AND a publishing contract, as well as $500 prize for an Honor Award winner.

Submit to Wordstock by July 31

Author! Author! 

Wordstock: Portland’s Book Festival is accepting applications for inclusion. The Festival will re-launch as a one-day event at the Portland Art Museum on Saturday, November 7, 2015.

The 2015 Wordstock Festival submission period is January 5 to July 31, 2015.

The Wordstock Festival will consider books in the following genres:

• Fiction — all genres
• Narrative nonfiction — history, biography, memoir, and essays
• Cookbooks and food writing
• Poetry
• Children’s literature, including middle-grade and young adult
• Art and architecture

Wordstock: Portland’s Book Festival focuses on the promotion of literature and literary culture; books on the topics of self-improvement, how-to, or books strictly of academic or religious interest will not be considered. Click here for full guidelines.

There are only about ten days until the submission deadline to have your art considered for the SCBWI Western Washington winter exhibit at the Washington State History Museum in Tacoma.

Submission deadline: Friday, August 29, 2014.

• Submitted artwork, whether existing work or created specifically for the exhibit, must be inspired by the events, myths, landscape, and history of Washington State. 
• Artwork in all media will be considered. 
• Exhibiting artists must be SCBWI members and live in the Western Washington region.  

Remember, your illustrations must be inspired by Washington State history, myth, lore and place. Imagination and storytelling are definitely in order. Bring it on!

Applications are now open for The Society of Illustrators Original Art Show 2014. Printed books or F&Gs for books published in 2013/2014 are eligible for this prestigious show; publishers often enter but illustrators can enter themselves, too (although self-published titles are not eligible). A few details:

Exhibition dates: October 22 - December 20, 2014
Application deadline: Friday, July 18, 2014
Entry fee: $30 per title, or $20 for SI members submitting their own work
Jury: David Gordon, Bagram Ibatoulline, Donna Mark, Kelly Murphy, Elizabeth Sayles, Yuko Shimizu, and Paula Wiseman

Submit now for New Visions Award

Tu Books, an imprint of Lee& Low Books, a publisher well known for nurturing and supporting diverse books and authors, originated the New Visions Award in 2012. The award is given to a middle- grade or young adult fantasy, science fiction, or mystery novel by a writer of color. It's a fantastic chance for new authors of color to break into the world of publishing for young readers.

Submissions are being received now, for this year's award, up until October 31, 2014.

Get on the bus!

What do you hear when you hear the word "home?" Submissions are open now through June 30 for Poetry on Buses with the theme of Writing Home. This 4Culture program celebrates poetry by displaying poems on Metro transit buses as well as online and at an event this fall.

If you live in King County, consider submitting a poem of 50 words or less in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Somali, or Russian.

Need help? Planning poet Roberto Ascalon will give a free workshop on Tuesday, June 17, (yes, tomorrow) at 6:30 p.m. in Seattle. You could also attend the Russian community workshop on June 18 and/or the Latino community workshop and Fandango on June 21.

Hey you, Washington artists!

SCBWI Western Washington will take part in a winter exhibit at the Washington State History Museum in Tacoma this year, and you're invited to submit art for consideration. The show will be held November 2014 through January 2015, and the exhibit space is adjacent to the museum store and open to the public free of charge.

Ed publisher call for submissions

SCBWI WWA ex pat Chris Eboch, now in New Mexico, sends along this opportunity with Susan Tierney, now acquisitions editor at Schoolwide, an educational publisher of reading, writing, and grammar curriculum products. They're looking for submissions of books, stories, and articles for which the author holds rights and that support K-8 reading and writing for a digital classroom library. They're interested in practically any fiction or nonfiction except preK and older YA, and they'll accept (1) previously published materials for which the author holds rights or (2) completed manuscripts of original, unpublished work.

Email only to submissions@schoolwide.com, with author contact information;
website address, if any; title of the work; word or page count; targeted age/grade level; and a brief synopsis or outline in the message body. For previously published works, indicate the publisher, date of publication, and if applicable, whether an illustrator holds rights to the artwork. Attach the completed work (Microsoft Word only) and a résumé or list of writing credits. Indicate if the submission is unpublished, self-published, or previously published, and if so, by whom. Place “Manuscript Submission, SCBWI” in the subject line.

They'll pay a royalty based on the number of times a title is accessed, and they'll respond in six months, if interested. Chris notes that out-of-print works will get the first look, under the assumption that they will need less editing.

Test materials — call for submissions

The Kansas Center for Educational Testing and Evaluation (CETE) is looking for quality poetry and prose for use on state assessments. (CETE is a research center at the University of Kansas that administers the Kansas Assessment Program on behalf of the Kansas Department of Education.)

 CETE is accepting poetry, fiction, and nonfiction texts for consideration. Accepted materials will be used on reading assessments for grades 3 through 12. CETE, which buys exclusive assessment rights and non-exclusive other rights, pays $250 upon acceptance. Previously published work is acceptable, but the author must hold the copyright and include prior publication information when submitting.
