Apply for a 4Culture Project Grant

Two 4Culture grants to individuals are currently open for submission. 

4Culture is the cultural arts organization for King County and their grants benefit King County residents. For creative artists and heritage-related projects by individuals, money for Art Projects and Heritage Projects is available. Both grants require a project proposal and other submission materials.Though these annual programs are competitive, staff workshops help prospective applicants craft compelling applications. SCBWI writers and illustrators living in King County are eligible and we urge you to apply for support of specific projects you may have underway, need to research or are in development.

Monday night delight

On this Monday, November 10, Seattle's Poetry on Buses: Writing Home program kicks off a year of poetry with music, poetry, the poetry buses — and maybe you? — at the Moore Theatre in Seattle. Celebrate the 365 poets whose poetry will be "going round and round" on busses. Several are SCBWI WWA members. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the show begins at 7:30. Hope to see you there!

Get on the bus!

What do you hear when you hear the word "home?" Submissions are open now through June 30 for Poetry on Buses with the theme of Writing Home. This 4Culture program celebrates poetry by displaying poems on Metro transit buses as well as online and at an event this fall.

If you live in King County, consider submitting a poem of 50 words or less in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Somali, or Russian.

Need help? Planning poet Roberto Ascalon will give a free workshop on Tuesday, June 17, (yes, tomorrow) at 6:30 p.m. in Seattle. You could also attend the Russian community workshop on June 18 and/or the Latino community workshop and Fandango on June 21.

Countdown to a crafty, casual, cozy weekend!

Our Writing and Illustrating for Children Conference in April is barely a month away, and the seats are filling fast! If you're attending (and if not, why the heck not?), don't miss the chance to make a great weekend of it with your tribe by getting a hotel room at the Marriott Redmond Town Center, our conference hotel, for a night or two. Share the room with pals to cut the already good rate and double the fun.

If you're like many participants, that April weekend may be one of your few chances this year to take a break from other responsibilities and really focus on your writing or illustrating goals... or even accomplish some work. Two calls for artwork

Two opportunities, same deadline: November 4

1) 4Culture, the cultural arts agency for King Country, seeks original, high-quality works on paper and photographs by studio artists residing in Washington and Oregon for inclusion in the King County Public Art Collection. Illustrators are strongly urged to apply to this purchase opportunity at 4Culture, the cultural arts agency for King County.

Artists wishing to be considered for this opportunity should submit up to six images of works that are available for purchase; submitted work must be reserved “on hold” until notifications go out in early December. Artists are encouraged to submit works that incorporates color as well as themes and/or imagery suitable for public settings and culturally diverse audiences. For the sake of portability, the artwork dimension will be limited to a minimum of 14 inches and/or a maximum of 38 inches in height or width, and maximum of 3 inches in depth. 2) Jack Straw Productions is currently offering residencies for their 2014 Artist Support Program. Up to eight artists/teams are awarded up to 20 hours of free recording and production time with an engineer at Jack Straw Productions. 4Culture Individual Project Grants

Two local funding opportunities for Writers and Illustrators

March 6 & April 15

King County based artists and writers are eligible to apply to 4Culture for Individual Artist Project Grants. Applications are due March 6 and are submitted online. For this opportunity, you will need to outline a project and a budget, as well as submit supporting material (manuscript samples, images). Grants could support time to work on a manuscript or illustrations. The last public workshop is February 26, but program staff Heather Dwyer is available to answer questions about application. The resource room at 4Culture has examples of past applications that are available for review.

Arts 4Culture page with grant information

Artist Trust funds Washington State artists of all disciplines. Their Grants for Artist Projects program funds projects up to $1500. Application information will be available March 5 and applications are due April 15. This grant application is simple and requires project description, budget and work samples.

GAP Grant information 

4Culture Opportunity for Artists

4Culture, working in partnership with King County's Wastewater Treatment Division, is seeking temporary artworks that will inspire and engage the broader community in a conversation about water quality in our region, environmental stewardship and the extent of the Brightwater system. The commissioned works are not restricted to visual media and can be web-based, film, music, performance, and/or literary.

Selected artists and artist-led teams will be paid to develop conceptual proposals that will be reviewed and approved by 4Culture’s Public Art Advisory Committee. 4Culture expects that the commissioned artwork will be exhibited and experienced in a variety of ways, depending upon medium and context. Implementation for these temporary projects will vary, between September 2012 and October 2013.

There is an overall Conveyance art budget of $60,000. This budget will be divided among the selected artists with individual budgets ranging between $5,000 and $20,000. The artist selection panel will make the decision about how many artists to commission and the individual budget awarded to each selected artist.

Deadline: March 26, 2012 by 5:00 p.m.

Eligibility: Open to professional artists and artist-led teams residing in King and Snohomish Counties.

Budget: varies by project - $60,000 total for all commissioned works

4Culture Grants

4Culture, King County's cultural arts organization, is accepting applications for Individual Artist Project grants with a deadline of March 9 for the online application. Grants may support

• The development of new work
• The interpretation of existing work
• The presentation of new work or collection of works
• Support professional development of an artist (e.g. workshop, conference, residency)
• Support the rental or purchase of materials or equipment that further the applicant's artistic development

This is a competitive grant, so treat it as you would a submittal to an agent. Guidelines, application workshop information and the online application may be found on the 4Culture website. Go for it!
