Passport Series Scholarships

This year, SCBWI WWA is pleased to offer Passport Series scholarships to those who might otherwise find it difficult to afford our meetings and webinars. Apply to enjoy a full year of amazing programming free of charge!

To apply for a Passport Series scholarship, please send us a 250-word cover letter explaining why you’d like to be considered for a scholarship, and a 250-word pitch for your work-in-progress (illustrators may provide up to 5 PDF samples). Email your application to wwa-ra@scbwi.org by September 30, 2018. 

Winners will be notified in time to participate in our Editor Extravaganza October 13 with Tiffany Liao.

Passport programming this year will include the following monthly meetings and webinars:

● September 17, 2018, 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Webinar: Author/agent Lauren Spieller with “Dazzling First Pages.” (All attendees must register to participate. Watch email and social media for announcements.)

● October 13, 2018, 10:00 a.m. to noon, Seattle Central Library, Microsoft Auditorium: Mirrors, Windows & Doors: Writing & Thinking Cross-Culturally with Tiffany Liao, Editor at Henry Holt Books for Young Readers.

● October 17, 2018, 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Webinar: A Conversation with Martha Brockenbrough, The Writing of Unpresidented: A Biography of Donald Trump, hosted by Lisa L. Owens. (All attendees must register to participate. Watch email and social media for announcements.)

● November 10, 2018, 10 a.m to noon, Eastside Location TBD. Come to this monthly meeting where we will use the time to make announcements, break the ice, and share our first pages in small breakout groups with others who write in our age group. Enjoy this first-ever Passport offering -- with tasty snacks, music, and writing buddies!

● November 14, 2018, 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Webinar: Just the Facts: On Researching Your Nonfiction Children’s Book with Lisa L. Owens, hosted by Joni Sensel. (All attendees must register to participate. Watch email and social media for announcements.)

● December 8, 2018, 10 a.m. to noon, Seattle Pacific University: POV & Emotion: Writing Reluctant First-Person Narrators with Rob Land. And don’t miss our ever-popular holiday cookie contest and book exchange!

● February 2019, Webinar: A Creativity Webinar moderated by Joni Sensel. SCBWI WWA’s creativity liaison, Joni Sensel, will moderate a webinar about a topic related to creativity, your imagination, and how to harness them to improve your work, your life, or both. ● April 13, 2019, 10 a.m. to noon, Bellevue College: Worldbuilding: How to Create Solid Worlds That Feel Real with Alma Alexander. 

● May 11, 2019, 10 a.m. to noon, Seattle Pacific University: Join us for our final meeting of the year as we take a video stroll through two illustrator studios. After the video, both illustrators will answer questions from the audience about their work. (Illustrators to be announced in the new year.)

Scholoarship Opportunity

The Austin, TX 2017 Scholarship for Creators of Diverse Characters is open to submissions. The deadline is Jan. 13.

This year the prize is for the full Austin conference plus an honor prize of a 50% discount off one day of the conference. We're giving out prizes for novels, picture books and illustration. And the scholarship is ONLY open to SCBWI members.

Members from anywhere are welcome to enter (although the prize doesn't include flights and hotel).

Tina's gift of stories

SCBWI-WWA's Illustration Coordinator, artist and Evergreen College alumna Tina Hoggatt has lived and created stories for decades. As a way to ensure the continuity of stories well into the future, she has created a unique scholarship at her alma mater, the Storytelling Scholarship.


If anyone you know might benefit from this extraordinary opportunity, please pass the word!

It is meant for students who work across all narrative forms, disciplines and media. This is targeted at those students who lack the financial means to continue their education, or are at risk for dropping out of college.


Kudos to Tina for such a generous and important way for future storytellers to get their voices heard!

Scoop: new diversity scholarship announced

Literary agent Barry Goldblatt, who last visited us in Seattle during January's ALA conference, just announced that he's founded the Angela Johnson Scholarship in honor of his first client. This talent-based grant will be for writers of color who wish to enroll in the Vermont College of Fine Arts' MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults program. The $5,000 scholarship will be awarded to up to two new students annually.

According to the press release, Barry hopes both to help attract more writers of color to this leading MFA program and to acknowledge the publishing community's — and readers' — need and desire for more diversity in authorship and content.

“There is growing awareness in children's publishing that we are not as diverse in what we publish as we would like to be,” said Barry, who has represented many VCFA faculty and graduates over the years. “I hope that this scholarship will enable some worthy writers to enroll and complete the program—a program I have the highest respect for—and then sell their resulting work to a good publisher.”

He chose to honor his first client and MacArthur Fellowship recipient, Angela Johnson, one of the most prominent and recognized African-American authors for children and young adults, by naming the scholarship for her.

Highlights Foundation 2011 Chautauqua Scholarship Program

You may know someone who is hesitating to pursue his or her Chautauqua dream due to finances. The Highlights Foundation offers scholarships and now is the time to find out more.

A lot of children’s writers dream of the Highlights Foundation Writers Workshop at Chautauqua. “Next year,” they promise themselves. “Next year, I’m going to Chautauqua!” Then reality sets in. The drive and talent to support the dream are there, but the finances . . . maybe not.

Please encourage your writing friends to stop dreaming and start planning! Pass along our scholarship newsletter. Scholarships will be considered in two groups. Early applications will be accepted through December 15, 2010.

Scholarships to Highlights Children's Writers Workshop at Chautauqua--deadline approaching!

Since the Highlights Foundation Scholarship Program was first established in 1988, more than 275 scholarships have been awarded to applicants who wish to attend the Foundation's Annual Children's Writers Workshop at Chautauqua, New York. These scholarships make the experience of Chautauqua possible for many individuals who might otherwise not have the opportunity or the resources to participate.

Individuals with a serious interest in writing for children and who have an established financial need are invited to apply. Scholarship applications are evaluated on an ongoing basis by the Highlights Foundation Scholarship Committee. Scholarships vary in the stipend awarded depending on an applicant's requirements and the funds available. Funds for scholarships come from two sources: a Foundation Endowment Fund or scholarships that are funded annually by donors.

This year the scholarship committee will be considering applications in two groups. It works in your favor if we receive your application early. The final deadline is February 12, 2010, but you are encouraged to apply BEFORE that date.
